Team Reformation by Birth Year Beginning 2018-19 Season

Starting in the 2018-19 season, Magic will be forming teams by birth year and no longer by grade. US Soccer changed team formation format two years ago. WYSA, our state organization, mandated that any team playing outside of an In-House League (all Magic’s U11+ teams) must be formed by birth year (or dual age such as U11/U12) but allowing those teams playing in an In-House League to be formed by grade (Magic’s U10 and under teams).

The Magic Board of Directors voted to keep the grade level team formation format until after the U10 year, but since have found it difficult to maintain. As many of you know, the registration system is set to register your child by birth year. If a child has a birth year outside of that setting, the player must be manually registered by the Administrator which slows the process for families, and increases the amount of time spent away from other areas of customer service for Magic’s Administrator. We are receiving pressure to conform by our district office, MAYSA, as well as surrounding clubs we interact with, so that our teams have players of all one birth year.

Therefore, Club officials, with assistance from coaches and managers, will be reforming teams for the 2018-19 season. We understand your anxiety and disappointment with this change; it is not one the Board made lightly. Magic SC will work diligently to form teams that makes sense for all involved.

Please refer to our webpage for specific details regarding your child’s birth year grouping. Certain aged players have choices of leagues and gender-specific teams. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. If several families from your team wishes for a Club representative to come and discuss these options, again, please contact us.

This is to reduce the possibility of a concussion due to head-to-head collisions when two players are going for the ball. The policy change is an immediate mandate and will affect players in the Spring…
